Oil level problem question?

have a 85 bronco,351 cleveland, changed the oil and filter. no leaks anywhere. when you check the oil level it shows nothing, dry dipstick.waited plenty of time for it to drain down to the pan. however if ya start the engine then check it registers on the dipstick. why does the dipstick show nothing when the engine is cold?
