The pull cord on my snow blower wont budge, is something broken?

I was moving from place to place in 6th gear, stopped, put it in 4th, and started blowing. soon after that it starting making a wierd noise and i could see it getting hot but before i could shut it down it popped and died. i took it in the garage to let it thaw and then tried starting it again but the pull cord would not budge. is somthing broken?
